Deep Cove Folk is looking for someone to create an image that will front its new songbook: Saanich Songs: An Anthology of Songs About Life on the Saanich Peninsula and Environs.  This is a collection of “songs of place” about the Saanich Peninsula which you can see and hear at https://songproject.deepcovefolk.ca/2024-song-book/.  This preliminary draft contains ten songs, but there are as many again “in the hopper” just waiting to be added, and more on the way.

We’re looking for a colourful and engaging image that will:

• Act as an invitation for viewers to explore this community songbook
• Accommodate text such as the title (e.g., like a book dust jacket or album/CD cover)
• Convey that what follows involves music and song
• Indicate that the contents are related to the Saanich Peninsula
• Communicate “folkiness” (as opposed to high-brow or formal)

A few technical things:

• The aspect ratio of your image should be more-or-less square, unless the content you choose demands something else.  This will leave room for text if the image is used on, say, an 8 ½ x 11 poster, or for a book cover.
• The image must be intelligible when sized down to 3½ inches across (for use on rack cards and other promotional media) but also able to stand up to being the home/cover page for the e-book as well as on posters etc. 
• Suggestions of appropriate text fonts, or text mock-ups, would be welcome
• The image will remain your property.  You’ll be granting us permission to use the image as we see fit in our efforts to enliven the presentation of Saanich Songs as well as to promote it.  Please contact us at info@deepcovefolk.ca if you have any questions or concerns about this.

• Your name, address, phone number and email address
• A rough conceptual sketch that gives a good idea of what you’re proposing
• A short verbal description of your idea
• A pdf of one finished example of work from your oeuvre that illustrates the style you’d be working in

Please submit only one idea/concept per email—but multiple emails would be welcome. 

The editorial panel of Saanich Songs will examine all submissions and choose the one it wishes to go forward with.  This artist will be contacted and paid an honorarium of $500 for the production of a completed image.

• All selected artwork will be clearly attributed to the creator (along with contact information if desired).  Thus, you’ll be getting exposure to a potentially large and varied audience.     
• An honorarium of $500 for the image selected. 
• An opportunity to work with Deep Cove Folk on other paid commissions as the publicity and artistic needs of the project evolve
• Deep Cove Folk’s undying gratitude for contributing to this emerging community songbook—and, of course, untold fame and fortune (well, fame anyway)…
