About the Recordings

Most of the entries in this e-book has a link to a recording of the song (simply click the LISTEN HERE button following the introduction for each song).  Please note that using the provided link to hear the song will often take you off of the Deep Cove Folk website.  Using the back arrow (<) on your browser can return to the site.

These recordings are quite varied.  Some are studio masterpieces. Others are from live performances.  Still others are casual living room recordings.  So be prepared for some variety in how they’re presented.  Under normal conditions, this variability would be seen as a problem.  However, we’re really keen on your being able to hear the songs—and, if you like them, to learn them.  In our view, a recording is the best way to do this and the e-book format makes this a convenient way of helping this to happen.  So, when you’re listening to these recordings, do your best to hear beyond these differences in production. Try to hear how they paint a picture of our vibrant community and place.  Please accept the wide range of recording methods you’ll find in Saanich Songs as a result of our attempt to make the songs as available as we possibly can.

About the Chord Charts.  You will find a chord chart available for each song by clicking the CHORD CHART button beside LISTEN HERE.  Again, this is a nod to our hope that some of you will be inspired to learn these songs and help to get them “out there.”   Most of the charts are what they call “chorts” in the business, where the guitar chords are presented above the words where they appear in the song.  Some, like “Little Town by the Sea,” present the musical notation as well as the chords being tied to the lyrics.  Ideally, we’d like all of the charts be like “Little Town,” but we don’t have the resources available at the moment to do this.  The “chort” has become the norm in many settings (e.g., the Sidney Wednesday Night Music Jam) so we’ve adopted this approach for now.  We hope they help at least a bit and that you’re inspired to learn some of these great songs…
